Lily Augus

Advanced BCPA

University: UC Berkeley
Major: Intended Business Administration and Public Policy

Email: lilyaugus@berkeley.edu

Although I am only a freshman, I am confident that I want to pursue a career in business. I have a passion for mathematical problem solving and building relationships with people of all different backgrounds. I believe that the skills BCPA will teach me, regarding accounting principles and financial statements, will provide the backbone of knowledge I need to thrive in any career in business I choose to pursue down the road. The language of accounting will act as my primary communication tool between diverse parties and will help me to analyze the challenges and opportunities regarding any business or issue.

Maria Barmicheva

Introductory BCPA

University: UC Berkeley
Major: Intended Economics or Applied Math with concentration in Finance; Minor in Italian Studies

Email: mbarmicheva@berkeley.edu

Accounting allows me to see behind the numbers and understand from within how an industry and a company operate. I am attracted to the smaller class sizes and the accelerated pace of the BCPA program. As a sophomore, I truly appreciate the opportunity to develop my accounting skills over summer, as it will help me to develop technical skills, which I believe will prove to be extremely useful as I step into the recruiting season.

Tyler Brendel

Advanced BCPA

University: UC Berkeley
Major: Business

Email: tylerbrendel@berkeley.edu

The condensed format of the BCPA program will provide me with the flexibility to complete the CPA exam unit requirement while balancing the demands of training as a decathlete on the UC Berkeley Track and Field team and completing a summer internship. I look forward to further developing my accounting skills and building my network in the industry over the course of the summer.

Byron Brown

Introductory BCPA

University: UC Santa Cruz
Major: Global Economics

Email: byronybrown@gmail.com

In the fall of my sophomore year, I decided to major in global economics. Financial Accounting was a required course, so I took it only to find out that I genuinely enjoyed accounting. Seeing as UCSC's accounting program is slightly limited, and I had learned of the BCPA program, the choice was obvious. With this program, I can complete my major at UCSC, study abroad as I had initially hoped, and develop my interest and ability in accounting.

Esther Chian

As a recent Junior Transfer to Cal in Fall 2017, I am doing the BCPA Program because it will allow me to finish the required accounting credits that I will need to be CPA exam eligible by the time I graduate next Spring. I will be interning with KPMG in their Audit practice at the San Francisco office this Summer, and I hope to secure a full-time position with them if all goes well. One fun fact: I intend to finish running all the World Major Marathons at least once by the time I am 30 years old.

Kimberly Chua

I will get my Master of Science in Applied Economics and Finance degree at UCSC in 2018. As a financial worker who had some experience of corporate finance in Asia, I think with the academic training of my master program, I now have much deeper understanding of the economic and financial mechanism of my field. I realized that to be a productive and competitive worker in corporate finance, I should be able to utilize advanced accounting skills and have my skills testified and recognized. This past year has been a whirlwind! In December I graduated from UC Berkeley from the Haas School of Business. My junior year at Cal I decided to hang up soccer cleats (I was a Division 1 scholarship athlete for the Cal Women's Soccer team) and decided to take up the sport of Triathlon. The months following graduation (January-April) I totally devoted myself to the sport with the goal of winning the NCAA Collegiate Triathlon Nationals at the end of April. On April 27th I had the race of my life and walked away as the 2018 Women's Collegiate National Champion. I was offered my Pro Card and the chance to be a part of the U.S. Olympic Development Program following Nationals. Even though it was an amazing opportunity, I still knew in the back of my mind I wanted to pursue a CPA. I love accounting and I know that sports and triathlon will not be forever. The BCPA is perfect for me because it gives me the ability to finish up the required accounting units in an accelerated environment.

The journey to accounting was a long one that ended when I stumbled into a UC Davis Advanced Tax Seminar one fateful day. Although Cal as a university doesn’t offer an accounting major, I was lucky enough to find BCPA so that I can obtain the credits and academic background to pursue a career in tax accounting.

Being a part the Class of 2019, I have one more year to complete here at Cal before taking my talents and capabilities into the open world. After I finish my two Bachelor of Art degrees in Economics and Psychology, I hope to spend some time as an accountant before applying for an opportunity to earn a MBA degree. For me, the BCPA Program is the next step towards my future goals and an enormous chance for me to build my own personal network of professionals. Currently, I am looking to gain more experience in accounting, marketing, and other business-related professions. Beyond my studies, I consider myself a LA girl at heart with an appetite for new food experiences!

Hello all! My name is Paul Zambrano and I am a graduating senior that will be returning to the BCPA program to complete my 30 accounting units needed to sit for the CPA Exam. I did the introductory BCPA program last summer and absolutely loved it. Although I am an Economics Major, I decided to do BCPA because I wanted knowledge on how businesses operate. Accounting is the language of business, and I instantly fell in love with it. The BCPA program has provided me with the knowledge and skills required to be a professional accountant. In the fall, I will start my full time position as an Audit Associate at Grant Thornton. Grant Thornton is one of the companies that sponsors the BCPA progra and without this program I would not be in the position I am today.

BCPA will provide me an incredible opportunity to systematically study accounting and to prepare for the upcoming recruiting season with the Big Four.

One of the main highlights as an undergrad at UC Berkeley has been the BCPA program. As a third year Environmental Economics major and an Advanced BCPA student, I believe this program has opened a myriad of doors for myself—I will not only intern at Deloitte’s Audit and Assurance Program for the summer of 2018, but also sit for my CPA exams immediately after I graduate. I am hoping to work in an Audit and Assurance practice after I graduate and take my CPA exams. One fun fact about myself— I spent my spring semester in 2018 studying abroad in Florence, Italy.

After I graduated in 2016 from UC Berkeley, it took me some time to find out what my true compassion is. During my gap year, I started my table tennis career as an athlete competing table tennis internationally with my current top 5 world ranking in my event. I can do much more than being an athlete, so I decided to go to law school and be a lawyer. I am also interested in accounting. I am willing to take some classes and explore more opportunities. I strongly believe that the accounting knowledge I will gain from BCPA benefits myself in my future legal career.
